Story :

Anaamika (Nayanathara) comes to India from Gettysburg USA, in search of her missing husband Ajay (Harshavardhan Rane). She reaches the Old City area in Hyderabad and starts looking around for her husband in the Galaxy Hotel area, where he was last seen.

She also files a complaint with the local police station. As an NRI and a single woman, she is quite fed up with the attitude of the police officers who refuse to take her seriously. However, one man comes to her rescue and that is Inspector Sarathy (Vaibhav Reddy).

They begin searching for her missing husband but very soon, big forces come into play. The Home Minister (Naresh) gets involved in the matter and he tasks Officer Khan (Pasupathy) with the recovery of a hard disk that is central to the mystery.

The lives of Sarathy and Anaamika are in danger, as ruthless people try to protect a dark secret. How Anaamika gets to the bottom of the mystery and solves her problems is what this story is all about.

Plus Points :

Nayanathara is simple and effective as Anaamika. She has portrayed various emotions convincingly. She has pulled off two extremely contrasting emotions of fear and revenge quite well. Vaibhav is good as the sympathetic police inspector. Harshavardhan Rane has a brief role and he has done well.

Pasupathy and Naresh do their bit in small but important roles. The galaxy hotel manager is funny at times.

The second half of this movie is very good. Speed of narration is really good and all the dots in the mystery have been connected well by the writers. When compared to ‘Kahaani’, there are some changes in the story to make it more appealing to Telugu viewers, like the addition of a sex starved CI who lusts after Nayanathara.

There is a good emotional angle to the film and this becomes more evident as the movie reaches its climax. You can identify with the pain that Nayanathara is going through and you want her to win.

Keeravani’s background music is brilliant and it is a major plus for the movie.

Minus Points :

There are a few unexplained gaps in the story, but these are answered to a certain extent during the ‘Addam lo Ammai’ song in the rolling titles. Many people walk out of the theatres during such scenes and they might miss these clues.

Some scenes and mystery links should have been explained in a more elaborate manner by the director, as viewers in C centres etc may not understand the subtle points of the plot. The scenes where Vaibhav finally realises the truth etc are an example. The movie’s appeal will therefore be limited to A centres and multiplexes only.

A slow and slightly boring first half can affect the movie. Had the first half been as racy as the second, we would have had a brilliant suspense thriller on our hands.

Technical Aspects :

Cinematography is very good and is in keeping with the mood of the film. Shekhar Kammula has revealed in an interview that we intentionally went for harsh lighting etc for this movie. Editing is very good in the second half, but could have been better in the first half. We have already spoken about the brilliance of Mr. Keeravani

Shekhar Kammula is a talented director and he redeems himself with a very good second half. His strength lies in showcasing various human emotions in a very sensitive manner and even in a suspense thriller, he has managed to do that. He should have taken better care about the first half though.

Verdict :

‘Anaamika’ is a very gripping thriller that surely deserves a watch for good performances from Nayanathara and Vaibhav. Keeravani’s terrific background score and clever writing help the movie significantly. A slow first half lessens the impact a bit, but overall, this is a nice film from Shekhar Kammula.

Story :

Posani insists upon Suvarna’s participation for his own reasons. In order to convince Suvarna, Sirish starts acting as if he is deeply in love with her.

Suvarna falls for Sirish and truly believes in his love. However, she realises that Sirish is simply playing a drama and she is heart broken. She decides to take revenge on Sirish in her own way. What happens next? That is the story of ‘Kotha Janta’.

Plus Points :

Allu Sirish has improved significantly compared to his first film. He is more at ease with himself and he has performed reasonably well. Regina Cassandra is the star of the film. She is bubbly, adorable and cute. She can act as well and she is going to go places.

Sapthagiri steals the show in the first half with some good comedy. He is a talented artiste who can make it big. Posani entertains in the second half. Some of the romantic scenes in the film look good.

Rohini is very good as Sirish’s mother. The first half of the film is better when compared to the second half, as the entertainment levels are taken care of by Sapthagiri.

Minus Points :

The film is good fun to watch only when Sapthagiri and Posani are present. At other times, the film starts becoming slow and boring. The interval block is very routine and predictable. The concepts of jealousy and possessiveness could have been handled in a better way.

The second half is a big drawback, as narration becomes very slow. Normally, Maruthi’s films have fast narration with lot of entertainment, but in this movie you cannot find any of that. The reality show concepts and their execution are not so convincing.

The Gabbar Singh anthyakshari gang and the presence of Shiva Shankar Mastar and Sundaram Master do not help. This brand of comedy has become very stale and repetitive and people are becoming tired of these scenes.

Technical Aspects :

Cinematography is decent and production values are rich. Dialogues do not have much recall value, except for one or two lines. Editing is ok. JB’s music is decent and background music is also quite alright.

Maruthi’s direction in this movie is not as good as his previous efforts. He has not narrated the story with the conviction that he normally has.

Verdict :

Overall, Sirish has improved as an actor, when compared to ‘Gouravam’. A slow second half and lack of conviction in Maruthi’s narration spoil the fun a bit. Good performances from Regina and Sapthagiri make the film reasonably entertaining.

Samantha is cute and gorgeous as usual, but her role is largely limited to the first half. Her scenes with NTR have come out well. Shruti Haasan looks glamorous in her guest appearance. Rohini Hattangadi has done a neat job.

The first half is a big asset for the film. Entertainment quotient is good here. The film progresses at a good pace in this half.

Hero elevation scenes and NTR’s funny mannerisms will work big time with fans and movie lovers. All the songs in the film have been shot in a very pleasing manner.

Minus Points :

The second half of the film is a let down. The story has scope for being a good emotional revenge drama, but the superficial screenplay in this part of the film never really allows the scenes to make a strong impact.

The film becomes very predictable in the second half, with too much violence and multiple fights. The love story between NTR and Samantha could have been tied off in a better way. The entertainment and magic of the first half is missing here.

Ravi Shankar’s characterisation is very clichéd. The revenge episode, where NTR hacks off the goons in the mandapam, could have been shot better.

Technical Aspects :

Cinematography is good and the visuals have a rich feel. Thaman had done a good job with the background score. Dialogues are very good, especially the ones uttered by the hero.

Harish Shankar is a guy who understands what fans expect from their hero. He has showcased NTR brilliantly in the first half. He should have taken better care about the second half
